This flash cart allowed the user to put game ROMs on a MicroSD card and play them right on their Nintendo DS. I always wanted one as a kid, but my parents never let me get my hands on one. I wonder why…
Now that I’m much older and I know how to back up my games legally and responsibly, I decided to look for one of these “R4” cartridges. I went to eBay and found the R4 Gold Pro on sale for $6.99 with free shipping. Let’s give it a shot! Surely nothing could go wrong… what’s a time bomb?

Some people seem confused about game backups, let me explain. Pirates make a copy of a game they own, thats legal, then share it, thats not legal, Pirates download copies, thats not legal. Companies cant check every internet file or remove them. Companies can protect the game and make it harder to copy. If you cant copy, you cant share it.
Thats why DRM etc exists even if making backups is legal.

I still have an original R4 DS and EZFlash V. They still work great but the old R4 doesn't recognize high-capacity SD cards so I'm stuck with 1GB.

Nintendo never going to put ds stuff out again and game prices are skyrocketing. They dont make money off resold ds games anyway

I myself only started using the DS after the DSI release. My parents bought me and my little sister one, both coming with an R4 card. I remember it was R4 SDHC, no timelock or anything. Why exactly would you say the R4 flashcards became 'obsolete' and 'unusual' after the DSI release? I, just like many of my friends have used it for quite some time back in the day. I am not saying you're not right or anything, but I am curious why you think that! I hope to hear from you!

I have the same one. Aside from a timebomb (flashcard disables after a certain amount of time) that can be easily bypassed with YSMenu, I love it.

I've tested a number of multicarts by setting the time five and even ten years ahead and nothing. But if it does concern one, and one doesn't absolutely need one's old console to tell one it's time to go to work, then just set the clock back.

Thank you for this video. This was really informative. I’ll admit, I was about 13 when I got the R4 I have now years ago. I’m 18 now and lately, it’s been freezing in some cases. Which got me thinking… could it be close to being a time bomb? Hopefully, it doesn’t. But then again, I guess I have to weigh my options just in case.

oh my god. My first console was a Nintendo DS, got it for my birthday when I was 9. I didn't actually get proper game cartridges for it and had emulations from an R4 card. This just gave me so much memories and nostalgia. When I got a 3DS I was so confused that you actually had to BUY separate cartridges to play games cos I was used to emulations

I had a acekard 2i. And as a stupid kid i had to update it to 1.4.5. Rip acekard 2i……then i did some master camera sd hacking got myself twilight menu and now im playing my roms again. (when i got it to work i was the happiest person ever)

If the card time bombs, you can usually go to the manufacturers website and download updated firmware. Of course it will time bomb again in a couple of years, but as long as they provide updated firmware, you're good to go.
